A Bit About You (OOC)
Name: Amber Age: 16 Gender: Female RP Experience (other HP characters?): Well, I’ve had other characters aside from this one, if that’s what you mean. Maria has evolved a lot since I made her, and, well…yeah… Time Online (how often?): A lot of time…like…all day on weekends unless I am doing something. And during school, I have on basically all the evening unless I stay after or go somewhere…
Your Character General
Full Name (first, middle, last): Maria Milagrosa Sanchez Nicknames: N/A Age: 50 Gender: Female Nationality: Cuban Species: N/A Birthday: 1 September, 1926 Residence: Hogsmeade Cottages Occupation: Charms Professor Affiliation: Neutral, mostly House: N/A Year: N/A Wand: Willow (with a palm handle), Unicorn Hair, 11-1/4 inches Broom: N/A Pet: An English bulldog named Noelle Patronus: A butterfly Animagus: N/A Blood Status: Half-Blood
Appearance
Celebrity Claim: Gloria Estefan
Eyes: Dark Brown Hair: Brown and slightly gray from age Height: 5’2” (157.48 centimeters) Weight: Approximately 130 pounds (287.3 kilograms (I think)) Build: Average, but slender Distinguishing Characteristics: Beneath her right eye is what some might consider a ‘beauty mark.’ Also, she has an accent much different from those you would usually find in the United Kingdom.
Description of Appearance: Despite her age, Maria is a very attractive woman with beautiful assets. She stands at no more than 5’2” and weighs no more than 130 pounds or so. She has well-defined curves, located mostly in her hips. She usually tries to keep her body in an upright position with supposed-to-be perfect posture to show that she had confidence in herself.
Maria has very pale skin due to lack of sun; this deceives her ethnic heritage. She has dark chocolate-colored eyes and brown hair with like streaks of gray given to her by age. Beneath her right eye is a mark that some would call a “beauty mark”. At times, Maria feels that it defines her as her own person, but she also feels that it is a bit stand-outish when people are constantly staring her in the face. Over time, however, she has gotten used to it and learned to ignore stares. It is not like it is that big of a deal anyway. It is a part of her, much like the rest of her body, and there is nothing she can really do about it.
The woman has an obvious air of authority and professionalism to her. Even though she has a gentle face with extremely kind eyes, she tries to keep a serious look about her to show that she is not a woman to be messed with. It is complicated for her to do when her face has its gentle features. There are times, however, when the seriousness can be seen in her face, and that is when people know she is not joking around in the least. It is advised to those who come in contact with Maria to listen to her and be serious, for she is not a person to let you off easily, even if she does not appear to be serious.
Since she is a half-blood witch, Maria alternates her clothing. She sometimes wears robes while she also wears Muggle clothing. When in the classroom, Maria tries to maintain the side of her that is a witch; she wears robes to do so. When she is not in the classroom, she wears whatever it is she feels like wearing whether it be jeans and a shirt or a comfortable dress. She tries to dress mostly for comfort. If she is not comfortable wearing something, she will not wear it. That is just how she is.
Though she does not wear them all the time, Maria likes to wear hats. She has a few hats that she really likes and enjoys wearing while there are others she doesn't wear so much. She wears witch's hats during various festivities in the magical world; she wears baseball caps at leisure, and she wears her Cuban hats if she feels that she misses her home badly or just to stand out a bit. It's not unusual to see her in a hat, but it's quite amusing since she looks odd in them.
Maria is not an unusual woman, but she is not one that most people would come across. She does not like wearing make-up. She does believe that it can help take years off a person’s age, but deep inside, that person is still the same age they’ve always been. She does not like to cover her face and appear to be one thing whereas when she takes off the make-up (the mask) she is someone else. For that reason, she does not wear make-up and try to hide her age at all. She feels that she still looks good for her age, so she has nothing to worry about when it comes to that.
Many women like to wear mounds of jewelry to show that they have money while some wear it because they like it. Maria wears jewelry for neither one of those reasons. She wears earrings because she likes them, and she wears her wedding ring (even though her husband is dead) as a sort of memory for her since she still loves him within the depths of her heart. As far as things like necklaces, bracelets, and other sorts of miniscule jewelry items are concerned, she does not tend to wear them. The reason for this is unknown, but Maria is quite a plain woman and refuses to show off how much money she has or how pretty she would look with all the ‘sparklies.’ She will, however, wear a decent amount of jewelry if she is going out somewhere nice.
Personality
Likes: Writing, reading, singing, playing guitar (or piano), perusing memories, teaching, children, spending time around people Dislikes: Disrespectful people, Strengths: Charms, singing, playing guitar, understanding people, helping others, taking care of children Weaknesses: Hiding her emotions, tropical fruits (O.o; she loves eating tropical fruits) Talents: Singing, writing, playing guitar (and piano), performing Charms, Whims/Habits: Randomly humming and singing, going way off topic, getting to philosophical, thinking too little of herself, getting lost in her thoughts What form would your Boggart take?: It would have been her entire family, dead, but since two of the three have died, she fears that her daughter is also dead. So…her daughter, dead… What would Amortentia (love potion) smell like to you?: Peppermint
Description of Personality: Coming from an older generation of people and being raised mostly by her grandmother, Maria was raised to be respectful of anyone and everyone, especially those that were older than her. She was taught that the only way to get things in life was through respect. For that, she tries to teach other people the same thing through her words and actions in hopes of possibly shaping a better world even though she knows that her single efforts will make little difference unless people show their own efforts and learn to respect one another. Aside from respect for other people, Maria feels that all should have respect for themselves. If one cannot respect him/herself, they cannot respect anyone else. Besides, if you cannot respect yourself, how are you supposed to get anywhere in life? That is just how she sees it, and she refuses to think different.
Aside from respect, Maria feels that all people should make an effort in the world. In order to obtain things you want, you have to actually try and make an attempt to get them. She refuses to help people that will not help themselves or lack interest in doing so. If a person cannot help him/herself, how can they expect to get anything that they want in life? Sure, Maria does not mind helping, but the person has to show an attempt of trying and wanting to accomplish something. Only then will she decide to help.
Maria is a woman of obvious intelligence and infinite wisdom. She expresses herself through her words and actions. She always tries to provide people with a clear understanding of the world as she knows it by giving as much factual information as she can along with her personal thoughts. She is also not scared to voice her opinions and tell people what she thinks of various things. However, she knows when enough is enough and then falls silent. She listens to what others have to say and takes it into consideration when thinking and processing responses and things along those lines.
Maria has the infinite ability of understanding. Even if she does not experience something or go through something particular, she is capable of understanding another person’s feelings or emotions to help them pull through it. Her understanding can come in handy during many instances, especially when students think that all is lost and start to give up.
She is also a true believer in anything and everything. She believes that all people are capable of accomplishing things that are unknown to them. Yes, there are many people who say this, but there are doubtfully many people who actually do believe it. Maria does believe it, and she does anything in her power to help a particular individual accomplish it. There are no “I can’ts” to be said around her because she will just tell you, “You can.”
Though she can be quite a comical person, Maria is very serious—sometimes too serious. Though she can understand jokes and sometimes make her own, she cannot always take them well; this can lead to problems. She tries not to be so uptight and serious about things, but that does not always work very well. That was who she was raised to be, and it was really the only thing that she knew since her father was nothing but seriousness and her grandmother was one that did not let her get away with anything; she was taught to be mature at a young age. Though she does not admit it, Maria over-reacts over some of the simplest things. When she does, things can jump the tracks and become completely dragged out, but she does not do it intentionally.
Despite her seriousness, Maria is a somewhat laid-back person. She tries to keep things as simple and cool as possible though there are times when things get too complicated for that. As far as her job goes, she believes in enough fun to hold interest as well as simplicity to keep people from giving up. However, since a job is a job, she has to follow certain rules and regulations. She sometimes breaks those smaller rules for the benefit of both she and other people.
As far as reprimanding people goes, Maria tries not to be but so harsh. She understands that no one is a saint by any means, and she is not going to act like they should be. People make mistakes; she is no exception. When it does come time to give punishments, she mostly gives warnings. She believes in second and third chances and sometimes even fourth chances. However, if she has to given repetitive warnings or is agitated, she will not hesitate to give an even harsher punishment such as detention for her students. Maria seems like the type of woman that would not be too mean or harsh, and she is, but she can also be like an attacking snake--venomous and evil (well, not really evil, but you get the picture).
Despite the fact that the woman really is not good with starting and holding lengthened conversations all the time, she enjoys talking and being social. She is willing to talk to anyone about anything they want to talk about. She is open, especially when it comes to talking about herself or her family. She loves talking about them because it makes her feel good about herself and it shows her successes and some mistakes. In that way, she uses her real life experiences to teach others.
When she is alone, Maria allows her mind to wander and go off into La-La Land in search of memories from years gone by. She will get lost within those memories for extended periods of time. She finds herself at peace during that time. When she is with others, she will have her inner thoughts about herself and the other person(s).

History
Parents (name and blood): José Rocío (Muggleborn), Maria Rocío (Pureblood) Siblings: Rebecca Fajardo (Half-Blood) Any other significant relatives: Emilio Sanchez (Husband, Muggleborn, Deceased), Nayib Sanchez (Son, Half-Blood, Deceased), Emily Sanchez (Daughter, Half-Blood, Deceased)
Biography When people first meet Maria, they suspect that she had the perfect life. They always assume that she had a great childhood with plenty of money, many friends, two loving parents, and the best years of school a person could ever ask for. That is quite the contrary, however. Maria has suffered from many things in her life that have only made her stronger and help her teach others to make them stronger as well.
It had been a fairly rainy day in Havana, Cuba when a little girl was brought into the world. She was born to José and Maria Rocío, life-long residents of the area. However, due to complications in birth, Maria Rocío passed, leaving her husband, five-year-old daughter and newborn alone in the world. In honor and memory of her, José named his newborn daughter after his wife, hence Maria's name: Maria.
José never remarried on behalf of his two daughters. He did not want to change his life anymore than it had been, and he did not want anyone else replacing his deceased wife's place in his heart or that of his children. He cared for his children; they were his life. And, for that reason, he worked day in and day out to provide for them in a nearby cigar factory where he made very little money to provide for his family. Most would say that they were coping and barely making end’s meet. It was true. They were living off the little money José had made while working as well as the small sugar field he managed to keep. Sadly, the sugar did not bring in as much money as he had hoped, for nearly every person in Cuba was growing sugar; that was really all the land was good for other than tropical fruits that could be found near the beaches where they lived.
Since her father worked for so many hours during the day, Maria and her older sister stayed with their grandmother most of the time. Their grandmother was a widow whose husband had died when a horrible gang located in Havana had decided to do the devil’s work and kill him by whatever means had been necessary—in this case, a stabbing. Since they stayed with their grandmother most of the time, they looked up to her as their mother figure even though they called her ‘abuela’ and not ‘mami’.
Even though Maria’s family was not privileged to have large amounts of money or even a ‘whole’ family, they still found happiness within themselves and their friends. They just kept positive attitudes and reminded themselves daily that there were more important things in life than money, and they reminded themselves that even though the bearer of Maria and her sister had passed away, they still had each other. This seemed to help them in existence, but there was still an obvious sadness and slight disappointment among them that they never actually shared with each other despite the close-knit family they had formed.
Even though José knew that both his daughters would start to show magical powers within the new few years, he still wanted them to go to a Muggle school so that he was not questioned for a reason as to why his daughters were not enrolled in school. Rebecca was the first of the two girls to attend school since she was older. Her grades were not the best, and she was not recognized for academic achievement. When Maria started school, on the other hand, she did extremely well and was recognized for even the simplest of grades. She caught on quickly to what the teachers said, and she was extremely gifted in her subjects. It was not too long after she had started school that magical powers started to shine through and she had to be removed from the school system. This brought about a lot of questions. José merely lied and said that his daughter was being home schooled since she needed to learn at her own pace and not the pace of the teacher and the other students.
Ever since Maria was a young girl, she wanted to become a teacher. She realized while she was in school that she was different from the other children in the fact that she did not actually have a mother. She questioned it many times until her grandmother finally explained it in childish terms that her mother had died when she was born and that her mother was very special because she made sure the sun came up each morning and the moon rose with the night. Being the naïve child Maria was, she believed the words her grandmother said and decided from then on that she wanted to be like her mother no matter what it took. Her mother had been, of course, a teacher (at a magical school, of course, since she was a pureblood witch).
At the age of eleven, Maria was sent to a well-hidden magical school in Guatanamo, located on the other side of the country. José did not feel comfortable about sending his daughters to the other side of the country just to learn how to use what he called ‘a stick with something in it’. However, since his daughters were excited about it and since his wife would have encouraged it, he allowed them to go and learn all about their magical beings as well as things that he needed to know to help them later in life.
Maria did extremely well in school, especially when it came to Charms. She was nifty with her wand and knew how to control her powers at various intervals. Her sister, on the other hand, was not so gifted in the performance of magic. There was a lot of tension and jealousy as they each progressed their years in school, but Rebecca eventually discovered that she had her own talents: getting the guys. Little did she know, Maria really did not care about guys or having a relationship with anyone of the opposite sex.
After graduating, Rebecca returned home and lived with her father and grandmother. She worked and brought in as much money as she could to help furnish the house and care for the older people residing in the house as well as herself. She never complained about doing it since she enjoyed her work and loved helping family, though she will freely admit to anyone that it did become tiring after a while.
Maria did not give up her life-long dream of becoming an educator like her mother. However, in order to do so, she would need to have a secondary education; she went to the university located in Guatánamo near the old school she had attended where they were said to have some of the best educators. Her father had been quite pleased with her choice of occupation, but he did not like the fact that his daughter—newly an adult—was setting out by herself to attend some university on the other side of the country. However, he did not stop her, for he did not want to flatten her hopes and dreams that she had set so high for herself. He also did not want the memory of his beloved wife—God rest her soul—to die.
Shortly after Maria turned eighteen, her sister was engaged to a man she had met while working at her job. Maria was chosen to be the maid of honor, and Rebecca also asked Maria to sing a few songs with the small wedding band she had hired. Though hesitant, Maria agreed since she knew that the wedding meant a lot to her beloved sister. So, she met up with the small wedding band of no more than three fairly inexperienced men who were know mostly for their odd beats and amusing voices. Maria practiced with them and showed of her talents of both singing and playing guitar. It was then that the small group realized she was the one thing they needed to possibly make it big. They said nothing to her as they made huge plans behind her back and discussed inviting her to join their group. It was not until after the wedding that Emilio (the main person in the group) asked her to join the band just for fun; she agreed to do so.
When Maria met the small group weeks before her sister’s wedding, she had never imagined that she would later join a group that would become somewhat famous on the small island upon which they lived, nor did she expect that she had met her future husband. She had thought Emilio to be quite good-looking upon first seeing him, but she had never pictured the two of them together. He had seemed so much more professional and mature than her. However, a year following her sister’s wedding, the two of them started dating—and it had been Emilio Sanchez that asked her instead of the other way around. She learned that he was five years older than her, Muggleborn, and had dumped his amazingly ‘rich’ girlfriend (who was five years older than him) for her.
Since she had joined the small group and gone about recording and playing with them, it seemed that she had forgotten her dream of teaching because she had actually resigned from college as she performed since she could not balance such work and perform at the same time. They sold a few records and managed to obtain quite a bit of money. Instead of using the money for herself, Maria gave it to her father and helped him buy a new home located elsewhere on the island, and she also provided for the family solely. Her father, though pleased with her decision of getting a large amount of money by doing something she enjoyed, was discouraged with her for not continuing her education at the university but instead ‘playing around and hanging with some old guys’.
Two years after Maria and Emilio had started dating, Emilio proposed and Maria accepted. They married later in the year on the second day of September, the day after Maria’s birthday. Emilio always joked about it being a day-late birthday present from him to her that would last the rest of her life. She would just nod, laugh, and agree completely.
Two years after being married, Emilio and Maria were expecting their first child. Sure, it had not exactly been planned or something that Maria was particularly fond of since she and Emilio had not quite been settled into a steady place, but they were happy either way. They were both very much in love, and the both adored children. Maria They had put aside a lot of money from their record sales and bought a small beach-side home where they claimed to live. Since they traveled a lot for simple wedding performances and other small “concerts,” the young couple found that they actually lived in their vehicle more than their home. It was then that they decided to take a break while Maria was pregnant and just enjoy the time they had off their feet and away from everything.
On 2 September—the day after her birthday and the day of her anniversary—Maria went into labor while she and Emilio were out for dinner at a nice restaurant. She was then carried quickly to a hospital where she delivered a baby boy they named Nayib. Maria could not help but feel somewhat agitated by the fact that the baby ruined their anniversary and was about a week and a half early, but he was so cute that she could not help but smile and just be happy. Besides, it was the birth of their firstborn child, and she could not be mad at all for it.
Maria and Emilio raised him as they had both been raised—on the beach. They took frequent trips to the water’s side and allowed his feet to touch the water. When he was old enough, he would start to giggle and laugh and try to lift his feet out of the water as if scared, but that smile remained upon his slightly chubby baby face. He was such an energetic and happy child; it made both Maria and her husband very happy and made them wonder many times what their lives would be like if they had never met and married.
About a year or so after Nayib was born, Maria and Emilio got the group back together and wrote a few songs and performed them. Since they had taken a year-long break before releasing something new, it seemed that they had grown even more popular among the people of their country since they had all been anticipating the return of the small three-man-one-woman group. Though they traveled somewhat frequently over the country, they still had quite a bit of time to spend with their son, but they also had a hired nanny to travel with them.
When Nayib was five, Maria and Emilio debated on whether or not they wanted to send him to a Muggle school. In the end, Maria won by stating that his magical powers could show through at any time and make others think something bad of him. So, they kept their son out of a Muggle school and allowed him to travel the country with him before returning briefly to their home in Havana where they would get little relaxation since people had found out where they lived and were constantly pestering them.
In 1959, Fidel Castro took over as dictator of Cuba and the communist government. Shortly after he came to power, the Sanchez family along with several others fled to other places—mostly the United States. Even though the U.S. seemed promising, Emilio had said that he always wanted to go to Europe. So, they moved to England where they bought a nice home just outside of London in a very secluded Muggle neighborhood. They settled there with their ten-year-old son and allowed him to make several friends.
About two months after moving to England, Maria ended up breaking her back. She and Emilio had been driving in a car to see a play in the heart of London. As they were driving, a car struck their car on Maria’s side of the vehicle. She was jolted forcefully in her seat despite the seatbelt and felt this leering pair in her back and had a somewhat “electric” taste in her mouth. She was in a lot of pain and feared to move. So she remained as still as she could. She told Emilio that she thought she had broken her back, but he reassured her and said that it was probably only a muscle she had pulled. She knew otherwise, however. And, as to reassure herself, she moved her toes just to be sure that she was not paralyzed. She wasn’t--she didn't think she was anyway. Shortly after the accident occurred, an ambulance arrived and carefully got Maria out of the vehicle and put her on a stretcher. The doctors had first told her that she would never walk again, but they later suggested a very complicated and somewhat dangerous surgery. In an attempt to continue walking and be able to care for her family as she had done for several years, she agreed to the surgery. All had gone well since it was performed carefully and precisely. She was released about a week or so later once the doctors said that she was good enough to be released. Over that following year, she underwent a lot of therapy to regain her ability to walk. For the first few months, she was dependent upon her husband and the stay-at-home nurse given to her. Several tears were shed by both Maria and Emilio—mostly by Emilio since Maria had molded herself to be strong and not cry, though the pain her back caused her often did jerk the tears from her eyes. Within the next year, she was up and about walking in no time at all. She felt that she had accomplished the impossible.
After the accident, Maria contributed generously to various organizations in the process of trying to find a way to cure paralysis. She understood what it was like to be “paralyzed” and she felt bad for those who were paralyzed and really had no other choice. Her husband stood beside her in her choice of contributing to the certain charities. She spoke to those who were paralyzed and gave them motivating messages such as her own personal one: If you want, you can. She also sang a song entitled “Get On Your Feet” as a form of encouragement. Those who were paralyzed appreciated her greatly and looked up to her like a star they might wish up.
The year following her recuperation, her son received his acceptance letter from Hogwarts. Both Emilio and Maria were excited and extremely pleased, so they took him to Diagon Alley and bought all of his necessary supplies. He was then sent to Hogwarts to start his magical education. He was sorted into Gryffindor for his tendency to be quite devious and play pranks. Though he excelled in various subjects in school and he was very intelligent, got into trouble quite a bit due to his devious tendencies. It sometimes affected his work, and there were even letters sent home about the way he acted, which caused Emilio to send Howlers, which Maria never knew about since it had been a secret between Emilio and Nayib.
Four years after having broken her back, Maria found herself pregnant with their second child. She and Emilio were amazingly ecstatic. Before when they had tried to conceive, they found that they had been unable to since the parts necessary had been destroyed in the accident. However, she underwent surgery and that was all fixed. She sent an owl to Nayib at school, and he was very excited that he was not longer going to be an only child. When he came home that summer holiday, Maria was two months pregnant. Despite that fact, Nayib hugged her lightly and spun her around in a circle out of happiness. Maria had not expected it, for she thought he might be disappointed about no longer being an only child. She expected that the fourteen year difference between them made things easier to understand. However, that jealousy of having a younger sibling around and less parental attention would soon take a toll and show its presence during the times Nayib was home for the holidays.
On 5 December, Emily-Marie was brought into the world and welcomed by her mother, father, and older brother. She was born late at night in a nearby Muggle hospital. She, unlike Nayib, was a few days late but born as healthy as any other baby would have been. Maria remained two days in the hospital with Emily to be sure that both the mother and child were healthy; they were then permitted to leave. They were then an even and happy family of four.
Just as both Maria and Emilio had expected, Nayib was jealous of his much younger sister. She kept him awake at night when she cried, and she had to get everything she wanted/needed since she was a baby and knew no better. This caused a lot of arguing among the oldest Sanchez child and his parents, but he later began to understand as his younger sister aged each year and needed lesser and lesser attention, just as Nayib also aged and was lesser and lesser dependent upon his parents.
Emilio worked as a sort of businessman in London and brought in more than enough money off of which the family lived with some left over. Even though that was very true and they were surviving off more than enough, Maria still felt that she should have been working to help provide for the family instead of just staying at home with Emily. So, in a second attempt, she decided to enroll in a magical university and obtain a further education in teaching as well as Charms.
So, she did just that and went about taking a few day classes and doing all the work given her while still staying at home and taking care of her daughter. She took a lot of extra classes and worked especially hard to ensure that she managed to get some sort of degree to be able to teach what she wanted to teach without complications. Within two years (rather than the four she should have had), she managed to finish up and get her degree. It was then that she went in search of a job and found one that worked at a school for those who were physically disabled. At the school, she taught a class for those who were incapable of speech. They communicated to her by using “common sense” sign language as well as by writing things down. She taught to them in similar ways but also spoke since they were capable of hearing.
Emily started school at Hogwarts when she was eleven. She was sorted into the Ravenclaw house at the school due to her studious ways and intellect. She excelled in her classes during her first year of school, but she did not like it. She explained to her mother that a lot of the other children picked on her because of the fact that her last name was so different from the others and because she had a slight accent different from theirs. She made few friends and did not like feeling alone. She was not used to it, especially when she had close family and was used to being around others. So, Maria gave her daughter the liberty of being home schooled by someone who knew a bit of everything. They paid the teacher generously for her services.
Despite all of the things she has been through in her life, the past year of it has been the most complicated for dear Maria. She lost her entire family over the course of a few months and is still having trouble readjusting to life. Her husband was diagnosed with cancer in mid-January and had a very slim chance of living; the doctors gave him a few months to live. They went through therapy and managed to prolong his death. However, in the end, the cancer won and took his life. The doctors caught it too late, and it had already spread to a point of no stopping it. A few months later, while Nayib was on Ministry duty, he was attacked by a group Death Eaters. He put up a good fight, but was sadly killed by the killing curse. Needless to say, Maria was devastated and had trouble coping and still is in many ways. It was just she and her daughter for the next few months. Everything seemed fine. Maria and her daughter went shopping for some clothes and just to spend time together to get their mind off the rest of their family. Whle they were out, Emily was kidnapped. Maria has yet to find her; she is starting to lose hope, but she still hasn’t given up. She applied for the Charms position at Hogwarts in hopes of taking her mind off many things; she just hopes it works or else she is doomed to live the rest of her life in sadness and emptiness. Upon her applying for a position at Hogwarts, she moved to Hogsmeade so that she would be closer to her place of work while at the same time being able to have her beloved bulldog, Noelle.
